However, in 1997, a group of scientists and engineers sought to change that mindset. Through a series of laboratory tests utilizing a rigorous theory, this group developed a new fluid flow enhancement technology known as the PowerwaveTM Process. Investing in Oilfield Technologies – Why Rig Count Doesn’t Matter Anymore

Since the Hughes Tool Company began counting drilling rigs 70 years ago, the oil and gas industry has used rig count to gauge the health of the industry – a climbing rig count pointed to better times ahead and a declining rig count signaled growing caution. Industry leaders, however, are beginning to notice that some oilfield equipment and service companies are continuing to grow and prosper despite periods of declining rig count. Although we work in an industry that will always rely on the drilling rig, drilling and completion technologies have advanced so rapidly that 2 rigs can now do the work that 3 rigs did just 5 years ago. The dollars that an operator used to spend with the drilling contractor are now being spent on downhole drilling systems and bits, completion products and services, leading to declining fortunes for the contractor and record-breaking quarters for the smartest service companies. Mr. Spears will point out the winners and the losers in this drilling and completion technology race and will identify the products and services most likely to spur the next round of investment. As a bonus, Mr. Spears will also show how the maturing of the world’s oilfields is driving the sales of certain production technologies to heights never before imagined.

2006 SPE Awards - Permean Basin SPE Members

It is time to honor our outstanding members for the year 2006. This year the national organization has expanded the awards being given for 2006. In the past years, there has been three (3) Regional Service Awards presented to our members. This year in addition to the service awards there will be six (6) Technical, one (1) Outstanding Young Member and one (1) Corporate Award for the company that best supports the oil industry in the Permian Basin.

The six technical awards are in the areas of Drilling and Completion, Formation Evaluation, Reservoir Description and Dynamics, Production and Operations, Facilities and Construction, Health Safety Security Information Environment and Social Responsibility. This is a great opportunity to recognize members in the Permian Basin that has the experience and expertise in these fields. The Outstanding Young Member award is for a member under the age of 35 who has contributed to the SPE in this region. The Corporate Award is for the company that actively supports the SPE in the Permian Basin through its continued dedication to the members and activities of the SPE in the Permian Basin.

The Permian Basin Section of SPE is a proud supporter of students pursuing careers in the petroleum industry. We offer scholarships to encourage the pursuit of Petroleum Engineering and related engineering degrees. We are currently providing $2000 each to thirty-four students for the 2007-2008 school year. Funds for our scholarships are raised primarily through the Section’s Golf Tournament and the CO2 Conference, with additional support from our AIMEES SPE auxiliary and our study groups. We are very appreciative of the section members and Permian Basin companies that support our events and make our scholarship program possible. A Brief History Prior to the mid-1990’s, much of the CO2 technology of the EOR industry was known to only a handful of large integrated oil companies. In 1994, a group of individuals, several far-thinking CO2 flooding companies, and the Society of Petroleum Engineers and The University of Texas of the chose to address that issue head-on.
