The New SPE Permian Basin web site is up and running! Mark Semmelbeck - Internet Coordinator SPE-PB Board of Directors contracted with Schipul Co. of Houston to redesign and implement a new web site for our section. Schipul is a leader in development of web sites for non-profit entities and is the web developer and host of the Gulf Coast Section, SPE’s largest section. The site is located at the same web address, www.spe-pb.org but the look and functionality is greatly enhanced. You have probably received an email from the site showing your log-in account name and explaining how to access the site as a member. I want to urge you to log onto the site and take a look around. One of the most important features of the site is the interactive events calendar. On it, you will find all of the section and study group meetings. Once you click on an event, you will find out the details of the speaker and topic and be able to register and pay for an event online. If you do not want to pay...

Why Shut in the Well

Production data analysis is emerging as one of the oil and gas industry’s most powerful tools for well performance evaluation. The use of a theoretically rigorous production data analysis tool is allowing operators to find significant additional financial value in their wells with data they already have in hand. Accurate analysis of that production data can be performed very quickly, at several levels of detail, and at less cost than traditional solutions of well testing and simulation. The method makes possible the observation of time-dependent skin damage, changing transmissibility, interference, liquid loading, and drainage geometry—as well as the quantitative evaluation of effective fracture length, drainage volume, permeability thickness, skin, and recoverable reserves. Production data analysis is readily accomplished with data, already acquired in the normal course of business, although most electronic data collection systems already record with “near well-test” quality resolution. Even very low-resolution monthly data often provides reliable interpretations. By contrast, traditional shut-in well testing incurs costs that include lost production, well services fees, and (very often) formation damage. The primary focus of this presentation is to show a variety of the diagnostic signatures that arise in performing production data analysis. The presentation will show actual well history examples including both oil and gas wells, high and low permeability, onshore and offshore, from several different countries, although the origin, operator, etc. will not be discussed. Examples with different signatures arising from water production, such as an active aquifer, a failed completion, and free water production from a producing zone will be shown. One of the examples shows the impact of a shut-in on the productivity of a gas well in multiphase flow. The impact of reservoir geometry on well performance is observable in one example, and another shows the effect of changing transmissibility versus changing skin. The theoretical basis for the method will be presented with simulation generated examples. In most cases, the visual assessment will be concluded with a quantitative evaluation.

Imaging Fracture Growth Using Microseismic Monitoring

<P><FONT color=#666666>Microseismic monitoring has been used to image hydraulic fracture growth in the Barnett Shale. The Barnett is a naturally fractured shale reservoir, which causes significant complexity in fracture growth during well stimulation operations. Several Barnett treatments have been successfully imaged between March 2000 and December 2001. In this paper, examples will be given to illustrate the complexity and variability which is developed during the treatment as the slurry interacts with the pre-existing fracture sets. The microseismic images explain why the stimulations occasionally grow at an angle to the assumed fracture orientation and into neighboring wells. Differences in production rates from various wells could also be related to the fracture geometry. The implications of the images to reservoir management highlight the benefit of imaging individual fracture networks to avoid overlapping and for targeting potential new well locations. </FONT>
<P><FONT color=#666666>Richard J. Zinno is the Director of Hydraulic Fracture Monitoring and Permanent Borehole Seismics at Schlumberger. He earned his MS degree in Geophysics at Southern Methodist University in Dallas with his graduate thesis on the subject of microseismic monitoring of hydraulic fracturing. He earned his BS in Geology/Geophysics at Midwestern State University and his BA in Psychology/Biology at Boston College. Before joining Schlumberger he was President of Acoustic Mapping Consultants where he designed and managed the first real-time, commercial, microseismic hydraulic fracture monitoring projects. In his twenty years of industry experience, he has also held various positions as an exploration geophysicist with Union Pacific Resources and Seismograph Service Company, covering the full range of seismic acquisition, processing, and interpretation. </FONT></P>

Injection Water Management: Challenges and Opportunities

Water injection for waterflooding, disposal of produced water or pressure maintenance is becoming an increasingly important issue. Case studies for seawater and produced water injection are presented to show that the injector performance can vary widely. In some instances injectivities can decline rapidly in unfractured injectors even when relatively clean water is injected, while in others no decline is observed while untreated produced water is injected. Guidelines are presented on what expect under a given set of injection conditions and how injectivity declines can be interpreted. A vast majority of water injection wells have injection-induced fractures that grow with time (over a period of years). The growth of these fractures differs in important ways from the growth of typical hydraulic fractures. The injectivity behavior of such injectors in discussed in detail. A single well model is presented that predicts the length of injection well fractures by modeling fracture growth...

<itunes:subtitle>Injection Water Management: Challenges and Opportunities</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>Water injection for waterflooding, disposal of produced water or pressure maintenance is becoming an increasingly important issue. A single well model is presented that predicts the length of injection well fractures by modeling fracture growth...</itunes:summary>

Terrorism and the Oil Field, Are We Prepared To Handle Terrorist Attacks?

<P><FONT color=#666666>Neal Adams' expertise in the oil industry as a firefighter, blowout control specialist, engineer, and consultant makes him one the most influential voices on terrorism in the oilfield. Mr. Adams has worked in 35 countries, including all the oil producing regions. He was instrumental in extinguishing the fires set by Saddam Hussein in the Kuwaiti oil fields during the Gulf War, and was honored with a plaque from the Kingdom of Kuwait in appreciation for his efforts. His heroics were documented in a technical video called Kuwait in Flames, which took top awards at the New York Film Festival in the industrial video category and first place in the 1993 Telly Awards. Adams has previously held top-secret clearance with the CIA, consulting on the Russian oil economy and its relationship to military issues. He conducts courses and has consulted for numerous international regulatory groups, including Lloyd's of London, on issues of safety, security, and terror. In addition, he was technical advisor to Steven Seagal on the Warner Bros.® movie On Deadly Ground. Adams is the author of five books, 60 journal publications, and numerous technical research reports. He has been featured by many local, national, and international media outlets, including the BBC and Forbes Magazine. He is a black belt in martial arts and an eight-time karate world champion. Mr. Adams lives in Houston with his wife, two dogs, and cat. </FONT></P>
