SPE Student Scholarships

The Permian Basin Section of SPE is a proud supporter of students pursuing careers in the petroleum industry. We offer scholarships to encourage the pursuit of Petroleum Engineering and related engineering degrees. We are currently providing $2000 each to thirty-four students for the 2007-2008 school year. Funds for our scholarships are raised primarily through the Section’s Golf Tournament and the CO2 Conference, with additional support from our AIMEES SPE auxiliary and our study groups. We are very appreciative of the section members and Permian Basin companies that support our events and make our scholarship program possible. Please note that, in order to recognize and honor the sources of our scholarship funds, preference for receiving a scholarship will be given to students whose hometowns are in the Permian Basin, and also to those students who have an SPE member as a parent, grandparent or guardian. 12th Annual CO2 Conference and CO2 Conference Week The Woodlands ( Houston area) and Midland Texas December 4 – 8, 2006 First: Why a CO2 Conference? A Brief History Prior to the mid-1990’s, much of the CO2 technology of the EOR industry was known to only a handful of large integrated oil companies. In 1994, a group of individuals, several far-thinking CO2 flooding companies, and the Society of Petroleum Engineers and The University of Texas of the chose to address that issue head-on. They created a series of CO2 flooding shortcourses and hosted the first of what has now become the annual CO2 Flooding Conference in flooding for the world. The goal was to make the technology more accessible to a broader range of organizations and grow the industry by making more and better CO2 floods. There was a huge increase in attendees – 415 for the Enhanced Oil Recovery Carbon Management Workshop event and the following CO2 Conference, up from just over 300 in 2004. And its clear that from the early conferences in the mid-90s, the conference has grown from a local, operations-focused conference into a global event. Perhaps too quietly. Whatever your views on climate change – and count me among the skeptics – legal, regulatory, and policy decisions are being made today that will impact the production and use of CO2 in the future, said Kipp Coddington, attorney with Alston & Bird in Washington, DC.
